Travel Requirements

REVISED 1.10.19

PHOTOS AND BIOGRAPHIES
All photos and biographies for available dogs and cats should be sent to PackLeadersRescueCT@gmail.com as soon as the animal is ready. We consistently have success with adopting dogs and cats prior to travel which enables us to save more. When you send the animals’ information to post, we will add them to our schedule and post them on Adoptapet.com as well as Petfinder.com. We transport most weeks and will let you know when they are scheduled. Once we post them, do not promote or adopt out locally. Email us immediately if there is a conflict with this. We will have potential adopters call you (the foster) for more details on the animals. Make sure to return phone calls promptly.

Please include the following in your photo and biography email:

  1. Single or several photos of the animal without cages or bars.
  2. Name of the animal in the subject line of the email.
  3. Age
  4. Gender
  5. Breed
  6. Weight (important so that we can determine comfortable crate size for travel)
  7. Good with other dogs, cats, and kids?
  8. Any description of personality will help them to get adopted quickly.
  9. House-trained?
  10. Leash-trained?
  11. Crate-trained?

VETTING AND MEDICAL PAPERWORK
Download our vetting cover sheet here

  • Prepare a 9″x12″ envelope for each animal with our vetting form cover sheet stapled or taped to the front is required. Complete the cover sheet and include all medical paperwork on the inside of the envelope. This will expedite our check-in at the transport as well as the entire adoption process.
  • AGE
Puppies must be at least 8 weeks old and have had 2 rounds of shots. The last vaccine must be given no less than 10 days prior to transport. We accept cats and dogs of all ages but paperwork must be consistant with age.
  • INTERSTATE HEALTH CERTIFICATES
All interstate health certificates must be completed the Tuesday before travel, or within 10 days of travel, no more. This is required by the USDA. Contact us before 5pm Tuesday if the animal has not passed their health certificate exam so that we can reschedule and replace their seat with another animal. Space is limited on our transport and we are full every week. We cannot wait until the last minute. The address for health certificates is Pack Leaders Rescue of CT, 1026 Tolland Street, East Hartford, CT 06108.
  • MEDICATION
We cannot transport a dog or puppy that is on antibiotic medication (which includes Cephalexin, Doxycycline, Albon, Baytril, etc). Meds for a chronic medical condition, such as thyroid medicine, glaucoma, anxiety or seizures, is acceptable. Heartworm and flea/tick prevention is okay too. Dogs or puppies with an upper-respiratory infection, kennel cough, coccidia, giardia, ringworms, sarcoptic mange or any other contagious conditions are not considered healthy and should not be issued a health certificate and therefore cannot travel on our transport.
  • VACCINATIONS
All animals must be vaccinated against the following:

    • DA2PPv Canine Distemper, Adenovirus Type 2, Parainfluenza, Parvovirus Vaccine (MLV), also called the 5 way shot.
    • Bordetella (kennel cough vaccine). It is especially important to give this vaccine no less than 7 days and no more than 6 months prior to transport.
    • Rabies (over 3 months of age)
  • FECAL TESTING
Fecal testing must be done on every animal no earlier than 10 days before transport. If they fail their fecal exam, they must have another one done when receiving a health certificate on Tuesday. It must be written on vetting paperwork and signed by Veterinarian. All animals must have a negative fecal for worms, coccidia and giardia as travel is not allowed for any animals with a positive result.
  • HEARTWORM TESTING
All heartworm testing must be done no later than one month
before travel and results must be clear on paperwork. All animals tested for heartworm should then be on monthly heartworm preventative with dates administrated clearly written on the cover sheet. Interstate travel is not allowed for any animals that are heartworm positive.
  • NEUTERING
All dogs and puppies must be spayed or neutered at least 4 days or more prior to boarding the transport. We will not accept dogs/puppies that were ‘fixed’ the day before transport it is not safe and incredibly uncomfortable. Also, we prefer that the stitches have been removed before transport. If this is not possible, you must write a note on the vetting form with the date stitches should be removed or if they are disolvable.
  • FLEA & TICK PREVENTATIVES
All animals must have flea and tick preventative administered before transport and clearly written on the cover sheet. Animals should be checked for ticks and fleas the day before travel.
  • IDENTIFICATION
Every animal must have a paper or regular collar with their name on it and the recieving rescues phone number (860.474.0204 for PLRCT). The name on their collar and photo/description you send us must match. Email or text Tori 860.474.0404 the rabies tag, manufacturer, and date given before Wednesday of travel.
The least expensive option is white athletic tape, written with a permanent marker. We walk all the dogs with slip leads, so an actual collar is not necessary, athough it does help the adopter when picking up the dog to have a collar to attach the leash.
  • 2-WEEK QUARANTINE
Every dog or puppy has to have been away from the shelter/pound/animal control for a minimum of 2 weeks (14 days)…it can be at a vet’s, a kennel or a foster home. Please respect this requirement as we take everyone on their word that the 2-week quarantine has been followed. Remember, it is ultimately for the health and safety of the dog or puppy.
